2011 Convention Summary
"Centred on Faith and Justice – Focused on Love"

The 91st Hamilton Diocesan Annual Convention was held at the Sheraton Hotel in Hamilton the weekend of May 27-29, 2011, and attended by over 250 Catholic Women's League members and guests.

The opening Liturgy of the Eucharist was celebrated by Bishop Douglas Crosby, Bishop of Hamilton Diocese, at St. Luke Church, Hamilton. Members and guests honoured our troops by wearing red. Following the Flag Procession and Ceremonies guest speakers, which included Hamilton’s mayor Bob Bratina, brought words of welcome to everyone. A welcome reception was hosted by the St. Luke Catholic Women's League members with many "goodies" enjoyed by all present.

Saturday saw us in sessions with reports being given by the executive, Spiritual Advisor and committee convenors. Our guest speaker, Naomi Baker, the founder of "Canada Fights Human Trafficking", had some thought provoking and eye opening statistics to share about the plight of men, women and children. She is a front line worker committed to aiding those that are being preyed on in our own communities. Their aim is to raise awareness of human trafficking and to offer the victims safe homes in which to rehabilitate. The collection at Saturday's Eucharistic Celebration was to assist her and her group in their fight. The Celebrant Fr. Dave Wilhelm was assisted by Blessed Sacrament Council, Hamilton. A total of $1545 was collected and a cheque delivered to Ms. Baker by Rosanne Sogan, Anna Brady, Ana Sousa, Kristine Paul, and Karen Golan. The Celebration of the Crowning of Our Blessed Mother was hosted by Regina Mundi Council, Hamilton. After the Polynesian banquet we were entertained by the executive and many councils with "Polynesian" themed songs and dances.

After breakfast on Sunday, Betty Colaneri, the Provincial Spiritual Development Chair spoke on her journey as a League member. An instructed vote was held on the National Per Capita Fee Increase. This was passed. Elections followed. (see list of new executive on preceding pages). The Cathedral of Christ the King, Hamilton hosted the closing Liturgy of the Eucharist with Celebrant Bishop Emeritus Anthony Tonnos. He led the Installation Ceremony of the new Hamilton Diocesan Council. The closing banquet was held at the Sheraton Hotel. Bishop Tonnos was presented with spiritual bouquets and cards of well wishes by the Hamilton Diocesan Catholic Women's League members.

At the close of this 91st Convention everyone went home re-energized by the Spirit to be Centred on Faith and Justice and Focused on Love.
